MUSC Nutrition Services : Dietary Guidelines : Kidney Failure Diet Guidelines

When your kidneys are not working well, it is especially important to follow any diet restrictions your health care professional may provide for you.  Always check with your doctor or dietitian to be sure what your personal diet should include or exclude.

Kidney failure usually requires some of the following:

  • Limit foods high in potassium such as dried beans, oranges and orange juice, tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, dried plums, and greens.
  • Limit foods high in phosphorus such as milk and milk products, dried beans, nuts, seeds, dark colas and chocolate.
  • Eat a diet low in sodium to avoid fluid retention. Do not use salt while cooking or at the table and avoid processed and canned foods.
  • You may need to limit how much fluid your drink every day as well.

If you would like more information on this diet, ask your doctor to refer you to an MUSC Outpatient Dietitian. Call MUSC Outpatient Scheduling at 843-876-0888.
