Make responsible choices when deciding what foods will be available to your child. Encourage your child to eat but do not force feed. Offer a variety of foods to your child. Even if your child refuses the food the first time, continue to offer it on several different occasions. Do not withhold food as a form of punishment. Allow about one hour without food or drink prior to mealtime to stimulate the appetite. Limit the amount of juice and soda because excess fluid consumption reduces a child’s appetite to eat at mealtime. Establish a routine of meals and snacks, allowing for some flexibility when needed. Avoid snacks right after an unfinished meal. Recognize your child’s food preferences, when he is hungry and also when he is satisfied. Relax and enjoy meals and snacks with your child. Limit distractions (such as the television) so your child can concentrate on enjoying his food.
