MUSC Nutrition Services : Dietary Guidelines : Gastric Bypass Diet Guidelines

After gastric bypass surgery, your stomach is only about 1/8 cup in size. Eat very small meals and snacks throughout the day. Eat and drink VERY slowly. Choose a variety of foods including fruits, vegetables, starches, meats and fats.

Puree all foods in the blender for the first four weeks after surgery. All food should be the consistency of applesauce before eating it. Avoid any food that has lumps, pieces or seeds in it.

Avoid concentrated sweets such as regular soda, sugar sweetened tea, Kool-Aid, cakes, pies, cookies, ice cream, syrup, honey, candy, popsicles, sweet rolls, doughnuts and brownies.

Protein is important for healing after surgery. Be sure to eat at least six servings of high protein foods per day such as chicken, milk, peanut butter, fish, lean beef, cottage cheese and Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast.

Drink liquids separately from meals.

If you would like more information on this diet, ask your doctor to refer you to an MUSC Outpatient Dietitian. Call MUSC Outpatient Scheduling at 843-876-0888.
