MUSC Nutrition Services : Dietary Guidelines : Breastfeeding Diet Guidelines

While breastfeeding your baby, it is especially important to eat enough calories and drink enough fluid. Your baby is depending on you for good nutrition. Breastfeeding requires more energy than pregnancy! Always check with your doctor or dietitian for information on your personal nutrition needs.

  • Eat a variety of foods from each food group every day. Avoid eating too much junk food.
  • Do not skip meals or diet while nursing your baby.
  • Drink 2 to 3 quarts of fluid (water, milk, and fruit juice are best) daily. Try to drink a glass of one of these fluids about an hour before nursing your baby.
  • Most of the time, a nursing mother can eat any food that agrees with her. If you notice your baby seems to be upset by a certain food, it is best to stop eating that food.
  • Ask your doctor before taking any medication, including birth control pills.

If you would like more information on this diet, ask your doctor to refer you to an MUSC Outpatient Dietitian. Call MUSC Outpatient Scheduling at 843-876-0888.
