Adult Inpatient Nutrition Services

Inpatient Services:

  • Adult Inpatient Dietitians assess patients identified with the following nutritional risk factors:
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Pressure ulcers stage II-IV
  • New onset diabetes
  • Malnutrition
  • New Transplant
  • Long bone fracture in persons greater than or equal to 65 years old
  • Prealbumin less than or equal to 10
  • Ventilator dependant ICU patients  
  • Provide nutritional recommendations and/or education on an as needed basis
  • Determine the need for nutrition support as part of the Nutrition Support Team

A team of 10 Registered Dietitians (RDs) cover the 650 bed hospital system which includes Charleston County, Ashley River Tower, Institute of Psychiatry, and MUSC. Each dietitian is registered, and licensed in the state of South Carolina. Many of our inpatient dietitians have also received an additional certification in nutrition support (CNSD), or Diabetes education (CDE).

Approximately 6% of the total US population has Diabetes. Per capita, South Carolina has the second highest number of people with Diabetes in the country. The Diabetes Management Service (DMS) at MUSC is a team of clinical experts, including a dietitian, specialized in diabetes management, and dealing with its complications. For more information regarding DMS services, please visit their website.

Nutrition Support Team

The NST, under the direction of Dr. Mark DeLegge, consists of a Registered Dietitian, Pharm D, and a Physician Assistant. This team provides an inpatient consult service concentrating on parenteral and enteral nutrition. As part of the NST, Inpatient RDs meet with Dr. Delegge daily to discuss patients on parenteral nutrition. The E-Journal club was also created for NST members to review and discuss articles dealing with nutrition support, in order to stay abreast with the latest information.
