Better Tomorrow

The Better Tomorrow plan is Sodexo's global promise for sustainability.
Listed below are the details of the Better Tomorrow plan, which includes Sodexo's 14 commitments to making sustainability a business priority.

We will reduce our carbon intensity across all our operations and clients' sites
Climate change is expected to cause rising temperatures, rising sea levels, and damage to natural ecosystems over the coming decades. These consequences of climate change are projected to become the leading cause of hunger and supply chain disruptions in the near future. The two biggest sources of climate altering greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. are commercial buildings and agriculture. We at Sodexo are heavily involved in both of these sectors and feel that reducing our carbon intensity is not only the right thing to do, it is also an opportunity to reduce operating expenses and establish Sodexo as an important partner in our clients' sustainability efforts.

We will reduce our water intensity across all our operations and clients' sites
Freshwater is the most essential natural resource to sustain life. Yet over a billion people in the world lack water for daily needs and severe water shortages are growing in the U.S. and around the world. We depend on an abundant and clean supply of water for a variety of our business functions and water scarcity will impact pricing, supply and the health of our employees, customers and clients. Many of the actions we need to take to reduce our impact on water supplies will save Sodexo money and provide greater value to our clients.

We will develop and promote health and wellness solutions for our employees, clients and customers
Preventable chronic health conditions like heart disease and obesity are on the rise, impacting our quality of daily life. Sodexo and our clients are also impacted by the rising costs of healthcare and the loss of productivity. Sodexo's comprehensive service solutions create healthy environments and promote healthy lifestyles that increase employee productivity and provide a more pleasant experience for our customers.

We will provide and promote varied and balanced food options
We have the honor to serve an increasingly diverse customer population with diverse dietary needs. Sodexo is committed to respecting all of our customers and clients' preferences in our menu development and marketing approaches. This includes providing appealing vegetarian options daily as well as providing options to those facing health-related or religious dietary restrictions.

We will source local, seasonal or sustainably grown and raised products
Agriculture demands significant environmental inputs and has serious impacts on the environment, consuming a large percentage of the world's water, producing a large share of greenhouse gas emissions, and employing a large share of th earths population. Food is a critical component of our business and a starting point for where we add value for many of our clients. It's a visible and tangible expression of our values and represents the largest portion of our environmental and social impact. Sourcing from more sustainable sources helps ensure our ability to produce affordable, healthy and abundant food well into the future.

We will promote choices with reduced sugar, salt and fats
Preventable conditions like obesity, heart disease and diabetes are on the rise and significantly impact our clients and the communities we serve. Choosing diets low in sugar, fat, and salt can help prevent many of these chronic conditions. We can contribute to the health and wellbeing of our customers by making healthy options more available and promoting appropriate choices for youth, adult and elderly lifestyles. We have the opportunity to help all our customers learn to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime. By serving and promoting a selection of healthy meals we not only provide greater value for our clients and customers, we contribute to the vitality of the communities where we live and work.

We will increase the purchase of products sourced from fairly and responsibly certified sources
At least one in four people in the world is poor and works in agriculture. Fair and responsible product certifications make it easy to buy products that give a fair wage to farmers and help improve the environment. By increasing our procurement of fair and responsibly produced products, we help our clients meet a growing demand for these products and send important messages to suppliers about the value of fair wages and environmental practices.

We will source sustainable fish and seafood
Stewardship of ocean resources and supporting sustainable aquaculture is critical for long-term viability of our seafood supply. Sodexo is dedicated to ensuring that all of the seafood we serve is caught or raised sustainably. Our purchasing standards for fish influence our environmental footprint and send important market signals to manufacturers about the importance of sustainability.

We will source and promote sustainable equipment and supplies
We buy large amounts of equipment, cleaning supplies, and paper products. Our health, safety, and the environment all depend on the use of environmentally responsible products, packaging, and cleaning practices. Our selection of these items impacts our energy and water use, our indoor air quality, and our worlds' forests. Purchasing more sustainable products makes us a smart and expert leader in the field of facilities management and a valuable partner in our clients' sustainability efforts.

We will reduce organic waste generated at our sites and in our operations
In North America, nearly two thirds of everything put in the trash is organic waste - primarily paper, yard trimmings and food scraps. Waste reduction and recycling prevents greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reduces pollutants, contributes to human health, saves energy, conserves resources, and reduces the need for new disposal facilities (U.S. EPA). Sodexo can reduce the cost of waste to the environment and our business by reducing the amount we discard through more efficient purchasing and processing practices.

We will reduce non organic waste generated at our sites and in our operations
When we throw items away, we are throwing away something of value. Throwing away materials wastes the product as well as the energy, labor and materials required to produce it, take up space in landfills and threaten human health and the environment through polluting air, water and soils. Reducing waste not only reduces our short-term costs, it also helps establish Sodexo as a leader in environmental sustainability and in the provision of value to our clients.

We will ensure compliance with a Global Sustainable Supply Chain Code of Conduct
Sodexo Inc. employs over 110,000 people in NORAM, but millions more work for the companies in our supply chain and for their suppliers. As our supply chain becomes more global, we are challenged to ensure that all the goods and products we sell are produced according to widely accepted social, environmental and ethical standards. By ensuring compliance with our code of conduct, we can use our size and power to improve working conditions for millions around the world, protect the environment and ensure that ethical standards are followed.

We will support local community development
Healthy local communities are at the heart of society. Healthy communities are also good places for business. Sodexo contributes to local community development by providing services and employment opportunities, encouraging a diverse workplace and supply chain and offering capacity building opportunities. As we grow and fulfill our plans for Ambition 2015, we will improve the economic benefit we give to the communities we serve.

We will fight hunger and malnutrition by engaging the entire Sodexo community including employees, customers, clients and suppliers
At the end of every day, millions of men, women, and children go to bed hungry. All who suffer from hunger lack the nutrition needed for a full and productive life. Sodexo is one of America's leading companies and largest employers. We believe we can and should lead the fight against hunger by engaging our large network of employees, clients, customers and supply chain partners.
