NNM Proclamation

National Nutrition Month is always an exciting time for MUSC and Sodexo, and this year was no exception as employees and interns alike worked diligently to promote this years’ theme, Eat Right with Color.

The month kicked-off with a cooking demonstration conducted by Executive Chef Fred Bennett.  The demonstration was held outside of the library building and featured recipes with Giddy goat cheese.

On May 9, Registered Dietitian Day, MUSC celebrated this occasion with a banquet for the  dietitians.  Guests enjoyed tasty hor d'oeuvres, compliments of MUSC Catering services, while celebrating and recognizing the clinical dietitian staff. One particular highlight of the banquet was the reading of Mayor Riley’s official proclamation declaring March as National Nutrition Month and March 9th as Registered Dietitian Day in the city of Charleston.

Throughout the rest of the month, very few days went by where there wasn’t some National Nutrition Month-related activity. Each Wednesday, the MUSC Dietetic Interns presented a Wellness Wednesday booth that discussed a variety of nutrition topics. These topics included ‘healthy beverages,’ ‘nutrition and exercise,’ ‘going green,’ and ‘portion control.’Wellness Wednesday booth
Rate Your PlateThe MUSC Dietetic Interns challenged retail customers to evaluate their food selection with a ‘Rate Your Plate’ contest in the dining room.
The pediatric patients in the Children's Hospital also learned that "eating a rainbow" can be fun.  The children enjoyed coloring their favorite foods and completing other fun games in the activities book created by the MUSC interns.Pediatric patient coloring

Sodexo and the MUSC staff played a crucial role in promoting National Nutrition Month by highlighting a Wellness and You menu item each week. Some crowd favorites included eggplant soup and turkey-burger sliders. Monday’s were designated ‘Meatless Monday’ in the cafeteria, and a meat-free menu option would be featured to encouraged MUSC employees to explore other sources of protein with their meals.
