Peter Kalivas, PhD, professor and co-chair of the Department of Neurosciences, received the South Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research while attending the S.C. Academy of Science Annual Meeting on April 14. Kalivas was recognized for his scientific discoveries regarding drug addiction and serving as an academic leader and department chair in the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine for more than a decade. Kalivas’ work contributed to a significant rise in national stature as a leading medical research institution.


May is the official month of brain tumor awareness and the MUSC Brain and Spine Tumor Program officially kicked off their month long series of events with a health fair on Monday, April 30th.  Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, Mount Pleasant Mayor Billy Swails and MUSC President Dr. Ray Greenberg officially launched the events with a ribbon cutting ceremony in the MUSC horseshoe.  Following the ribbon cutting, participants were encouraged to visit with vendors set up in the horseshow, test their aim in a pie throwing contest or just sit back and enjoy the music provided live by local band, The 3 Dudes.  Check out photos from the event on the MUSC Neurosciences Facebook page.
