Neuro-Interventional Surgery
Dr. Aquilla Turk

Dr. Aquilla Turk

Welcome to neuro-interventional surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. Originally a subdivision of radiology, this service has evolved into a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and technologists in neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neurology and emergency medicine who specialize in vascular disorders of the brain and spine. The team works collaboratively to assess, educate, diagnose and treat each patient, delivering individualized care with the safest and most effective outcomes. Comprehensive treatment plans address the full spectrum of brain disorders and may indicate a combination of endovascular and traditional surgical approaches.

The team uses the latest minimally invasive techniques to treat the most complex cerebral vascular diseases, including stroke, atherosclerosis of the intracranial and extracranial circulation, arteriovenous malformations, fistulas, tumors and aneurysms. Guided by state-of-the-art imaging, procedures generally involve using microcatheters (tiny tubes) to close (embolize) or open (recanalize) abnormal vessels. This endovascular approach often eliminates the need for open surgery and may provide lifesaving options for previously untreatable lesions.

MUSC is among few centers in the country employing the specialized equipment and techniques necessary for stenting of intracranial stenosis, a procedure that eliminates transient ischemic attacks (TIA) by opening the blood vessels of the brain. The neuro-interventional surgery team maintains ongoing participation in the latest clinical trials for the treatment of intracranial stenosis and brain aneurysms.
