The Flu Shot:  When and Why to be Vaccinated

Guest:  Physician – MUSC

Host:  MUSC

MUSC:  It’s flu season again.

Physician:  The flu is no fun.  Your bones ache.  You cough.  You’re going to have a fever.  And you’re going to be in bed.

MUSC:  It’s so important to get your child vaccinated.  The good news is that there is a vaccine.  Who should get the vaccine?

Physician:  The vaccine for flu is recommended for children six months to five years of age and for the elderly, and for those at high risk.

MUSC:  And there’s even an alternative for people who don’t like shots.

Physician:  For those that are two years to 49 years, you can get a nasal spray flu vaccine.  It may even be better than the shot.

MUSC:  When is the best time of the year to get the flu vaccine?

Physician:  Now!  You want to get it toward the end of October, all the way through to February.  If you haven’t had the flu epidemic in your area yet, it’s still time to get the flu shot.
