Week 14 - Travel During Pregnancy

Hello. This is Dr. Mauldin. You are now 14 weeks pregnant.

I can only imagine that as you are getting into the 2nd trimester and you are feeling better, you want to get out of the house – and perhaps even out of town!

Traveling is best done during the second trimester. Actually, most things are best done during the 2nd trimester. You feel better. The nausea is gone. You have more energy. And your abdomen has not grown so large that you are uncomfortable.

First things first. When you are in the car, you must wear your seat belt – both the lap and shoulder belts. Nothing will protect you more than wearing your seat belts and having the air bags in place. You really do need both! When in the car, place your lap belt under your belly and place the shoulder belt between your breasts. Also, push your seat back as far as you can, but where you can safely still reach the brake pedal.

When you are traveling for an extended period of time, remember to get up and walk around about every hour and ½. This is important. You’ll be more comfortable and it will keep the blood circulating in your legs to minimize the chance of a blood clot forming.
