Announcer:

Welcome to an MUSC Health Podcast.

Dr. Linda Austin:

I am Dr. Linda Austin and I am talking with Dr. Philip Saul, who is a Pediatric Cardiologist and the Medical Director of the Childrens Hospital of MUSC. Dr. Saul, what is the value of bringing your child to a childrens hospital as opposed to keeping them in their own local community?

Dr. J. Philip Saul:

I think a lot of times, there are issues that come up in childhood, medical issues like heart disease, cancer, intestinal problems, or other things that are just beyond the training and expertise of your local pediatrician and thats when you really are glad that you have a specialized hospital like the Childrens Hospital here at MUSC where you can bring that child and get just the right kind of medical expertise for the problem that they have.

Dr. Linda Austin:

What are some of the specialties represented here?

Dr. J. Philip Saul:

Well, we have cardiologist like me, we have nephrologist to take care of kidneys, we have lung specialist, we have intestinal specialist, we have cancer specialist, and we have blood disorder specialist, so anything that you can think of in an adult that has a specialty, we have those too and we have all the surgical specialties that go along with those problems.

Dr. Linda Austin:

As well as the facilities devoted particularly to the special needs of children, social needs, the educational needs, and family needs.

Dr. J. Philip Saul:

I think you put it just right that we have got facility that is very family oriented and that thinks about the child as opposed to just the disease and in order to do that, you need all the technical aspects and the medical aspects and you need those psychosocial aspects as well very importantly.

Dr. Linda Austin:

Dr. Saul, thank you so much.

Dr. J. Philip Saul:

Thank you Linda.
