Don Holzheimer received a kidney transplant from his brother. Afterwards, he volunteered to participate in a clinical trial extending the use of a medication (ramipril) that has been used to control blood pressure to also control levels of protein in urine. This clinical trial also replaces calcineurin inhibitors (cyclosporine or Prograf) with sirolimus (Rapamune) to balance the effect of immunosuppressant medications. He has responded well to the medication and his doctor will be prescribing the use of this experimental mediation to continue. He reviews the experience of participating and the benefits of participating in a clinical trial.
