Dr. Harry Clarke discusses a new development in the residency program involving objective criteria. The three points of an objective criteria program are: 1) To reduce the number of years of training to minimize costs, 2) To determine appropriate training to meet federal mandates for the procedures residents and faculty members are credentialed to perform; and 3) To allow flexible advancement in training programs and rotations. The advantages of using a simulation lab in resident training are also reviewed.
