Dr. Gary Gilkeson, a national expert on Lupus, describes the disease and some common symptoms associated with it. Sheila Murphy, a patient participating in the MUSC Lupus Research Program, also discusses her personal experience in living with Lupus. Dr. Gilkeson explains that while Lupus is typically more common in African Americans than Caucasians, it is particularly common among the Gullah population of the South Carolina and Georgia barrier islands. His research is partly focused on understanding why this is the case, in hopes of finding ways to reverse this problem.
