Dr. Michael Nishimura, vice-chairman for research in the Department of Surgery, discusses his research in the area of gene therapy. He explains how research in genetic modification of lymphocytes is being conducted to develop exciting new treatments for cancer patients. While clinical trials related to this research are not currently being conducted at MUSC, Dr. Nishimura is working to make this a reality. Dr. Nishimura also provides some examples of the types of cancers most likely to be treated by means of gene therapy in the near future.
