Moving a salivary gland out of the area that will undergo radiation therapy may protect the gland from side effects of radiation therapy and may prevent dry mouth. Dr. Joshua Hornig, an Otolaryngologist, explains how this procedure is performed and the benefits of moving the gland prior to undergoing radiation treatment for head and neck cancer. A clinical trial proving the effects of this surgery has just been completed at MUSC.
