MUSC Multiple Sclerosis Clinic : Medical Treatment : Continuing Psychological Adjustment

Each of us makes changes and adjustments every day, as part of living and growing. It is important to realize that in returning to your home and community, you will face new situations, which will require you to change and adjust.

It is normal for all of us to have times when we feel confused, sad, upset, or down. All of these feelings lead us to think about how things are going, how we would like for things to be different, and to make changes we need to make things better. Feeling this way for a couple of hours each day, or for a whole day is not unusual. Talking over our feelings with someone we trust can often help us to sort things out and get back on track.

When these feeling continue for long periods of time and interfere with daily activities, it may be a sign that we need some additional help. These are some signals that may indicate depression. If these feelings are continuing, it is important to get some additional help from a mental health professional.

  1. Trouble sleeping, either having trouble falling asleep, or waking up very early.
  2. Losing interest in activities which used to be fun.
  3. Losing weight when not dieting, or over-eating.
  4. Feeling guilty, worthless, or hopeless.
  5. Having thoughts of dying or killing yourself.
  6. Crying a lot and having trouble stopping.
  7. Having trouble making decisions, paying attention, or remembering things.
  8. Getting irritated or angry easily.
  9. Feeling very tired, having no energy, even after a good nights sleep.
  10. Feeling slowed down or feeling restless
