When a person has experienced a serious illness, injury, stroke, or other condition, there are often changes in the ability to pay attention, understand, remember, solve problems, and to make decisions. Psychologists may use special tests to evaluate how well someone is doing in these areas and provide treatment to help with these problems. Treatment may take place in individual or group sessions. In addition, an injury or serious illness requires many emotional adjustments for individuals and for their family members. Psychologists can assess for difficulties such as stress, depression, anxiety, etc. and can help people cope with emotional reactions to illness and injury. South Carolina provides the consumer with the opportunity to file inquiries with the Board of Examiners in Psychology.
