Movement Disorders : Our Services : Botulinum Toxin Injection

Botox is the brand name of a toxin produced by a bacterium. Called botulinum toxin, in large amounts this toxin can cause botulism, which you probably associate with food poisoning. One of the most serious complications of botulism is paralysis, but scientists have discovered a way to use it to human advantage. Small, diluted amounts can be injected into specific muscles, causing controlled weakening of those muscles. This is used for the treatment of dystonia, which may occur in any part of the body.

Dr. Vanessa Hinson has specialized training in a particularly effective way of using this drug: Using electromyography prior to injection, Dr. Hinson detects specific abnormal muscles by measuring electrical signals. In this way, smaller amounts may be placed more directly in the affected area, yielding fewer side effects and better results.
