The treatment of movement disorders, especially Parkinson's disease, has progressed in leaps and bounds since the introduction of L-dopa in 1968. The introduction of new treatments remains a major goal of the Murray Center. We have been certified for membership in the Parkinson's Disease Study Group, a national consortium of University-based movement disorder clinical centers, and are part of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Consortium for Neuroprotection, studying agents that may potentially stop the progression of Parkinson's disease. MUSC also acts as the Statistical Coordinating Center for this NINDS project, and has developed new mathematical models so that clinical trials may demonstrate efficacy faster and with smaller numbers of patients. This will ultimately allow the study of many more new drug treatments.
