Parkinson's disease is not just a disorder of motor function but may also in some patients affects mood, cognition, and personality. Deep brain stimulation and our functional neurosurgery program gives us the unique ability to study those elements of the nervous system related to non-motor behavior change in Parkinson's disease.

Efforts include:

  • Effects of Bilateral Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation on behavior and cognition in Parkinson's Disease. Sponsor: MCRPD. Determine the effects of subthalamic stimulation on mood and frontal lobe behaviors.
  • Cognitive Impairment and Vasculopathy in Parkinson's Disease: Association with Hyperhomocysteinemia and Apolipoprotein E Genotype. Sponsor: pending.
  • Mood Effects of Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease: A Combined DBS and fMRI Study. Sponsor: NINDS, R01 NS40956-02 Period: 10/00-9/03. Major Goals:To determine whether mood effects of DBS in PD involve activation of the anterior paralimbic circuit, and whether stimulation at sites that activate this circuit have therapeutic antidepressant effects. Methods poster presented at the NIH DBS Consortium meeting 9/02
