Parkinson's Disease in South Carolina

By: KJ Bergmann, E Forti, V Salak, K Wall, JK Rodgers, D Lackland

The authors gratefully acknowledge the support of this project through a grant from the Fullerton Foundation in Gaffney, South Carolina.

The Parkinson’s Outreach and Education Training (POET) project, generously supported by the The Fullerton Foundation of South Carolina,  has allowed us (the Movement Disorders Program and the South Carolina Geriatric Education Center at MUSC) to gain an understanding of the impact of Parkinson’s disease in South Carolina and to plan a response to this impact. This report, created in November 2003, gathered data from varied resources, formed collaborations and networked with regional and national organizations. The data has proven to be informative, interesting, and important enough to have resulted in “spin-off” research projects.

What follows is a summary of these findings for physicians, caregivers, legislators, and the citizens of South Carolina, and beyond.
