Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine Services is involved at all levels of medical education and includes significant commitments to patient care and research. The most visible patient care commitment is the main operating suite of the MUSC Medical Center. Approximately 20,000 anesthetics are administered each year for a wide variety of surgical procedures. Our physicians evaluate and optimize a patients’ medical conditions prior to anesthesia or sedation for a procedure, prescribe and carry out an anesthetic plan during their procedure, and ensure adequate pain relief and resolution of all anesthetic effects after the procedure is complete.
In order to support the complex, state of the art surgical and imaging procedures performed at the Medical University, some department faculty have sub specialized in the anesthetic management of pediatric, cardiothoracic, transplant, obstetric, neurosurgical and critically ill ICU patients. Faculty members in a separate Division of Pain Management focus on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain conditions, as well as acute pain therapy modalities. This rapidly expanding service is involved in nerve blocks to control acute and chronic pain, along with rehabilitative services. The Pain Management Center offers a multi-disciplinary approach to treat chronic, acute and cancer pain utilizing the most advanced techniques and proven medications. Our team of physicians and providers is highly trained in the various diagnostic approaches and therapies. |
