Excimer lasers produce a cool beam. This prevents damage to surrounding tissue -- an exciting development in the eye medical and surgical field.
The excimer laser is a "cold" laser that uses light to reshape the surface of the eye. The laser "etches" or "sculpts" the front surface of the eye, thereby flattening the cornea and changing the refractive power of the eye. As the laser reshapes the front surface of the eye, only a fraction of the corneal tissue, typically less than the thickness of a human hair, is removed. The laser, which is controlled by computer, emits gentle and invisible beams of light that actually vaporize the tissue from the surface of the eye. Once the eye is healed, it is extremely challenging for anyone, even a well-trained eye doctor, to tell if anything was ever done.
