MUSC’s Children’s Heart Center offers inpatient and outpatient diagnostic, treatment and follow-up services for a full range of pediatric heart disorders. The Center also serves as the tertiary referral center for the Children’s Heart Program of South Carolina, a network of pediatric cardiology providers and outreach centers throughout the state. All invasive pediatric cardiology procedures referred by Children’s Heart Program providers, including cardiac catheterizations and surgeries, are performed at the MUSC Children’s Heart Center.

The pediatric catheterization lab at the MUSC Children’s Heart Center has pioneered the use of catheter-based closures for a variety of cardiac abnormalities. These minimally invasive pediatric cardiology procedures are now also used to treat adult cardiac patients.

Little baby with Helping Hand

MUSC Children’s Hospital neonatal intensive care unit was named as one of the country’s top 10 by Child Magazine.

Our pediatric cardiology services include:

Fetal Cardiology Program
Our fetal cardiologists identify heart abnormalities before birth. Specialized maternal/fetal medicine teams work with families to develop detailed delivery plans when a baby requires heart surgery soon after birth.

Telemedicine
Thanks to advanced technology resources, our pediatric cardiologists can identify congenital heart disease from hundreds of miles away. Our pediatric cardiologists are able to review echocardiograms and other information via computer, offering immediate feedback and referral. Technology also connects us with pediatric cardiology experts across the state, allowing us to communicate and educate like never before.

Interventional Pediatric Cardiology
From treating holes in the heart to coronary artery disease, we're using innovative methods that take the place of open heart surgery when appropriate for children and adults. We've had outstanding success in reducing complications, costs and the amount of time spent in the hospital for our pediatric cardiology patients.

Electrophysiology
We treat both common and complicated heart rhythm abnormalities in children and adults in ways that prevent the need for lifelong medicine and surgery.

Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
Children with life-threatening heart defects have special needs. Our 8-bed pediatric cardiology ICU unit is designed specifically for pediatric patients experiencing a medical and surgical cardiovascular dysfunctions. Our cardiac team provides specialized, coordinated care in a supportive, state-of-the-art environment.

Children's Heart Program of South Carolina
Children and families from the Upstate to the coast have access to the best pediatric cardiology care in the country. MUSC recently spearheaded the creation of a unique children's heart program that links all the pediatric cardiologists in South Carolina. The state is divided into four regions, with hospitals in Charleston, Columbia, Florence and Greenville. All of the hospitals will provide education, primary cardiac evaluations and surgical follow-up. MUSC will perform all catheterizations and surgery. It's only a matter of time before other states model our one-of-a-kind pediatric cardiology program.
