Statin Intolerance Clinic
The Medical University of South Carolina has taken the lead in the effort to promote cardiovascular health and heart disease prevention with the development of a comprehensive multispecialty program designed to give at risk individuals the skills and know-how necessary to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle.
Treatment options at the MUSC Statin Intolerance Clinic include intensive nutrition counseling tailored to the patient’s specific lipid disorder, evidence-based use of supplements for non-prescription lowering of LDL-C (such as phytosterols/stanols), use of cholesterol-absorption inhibitors, alternative statin dosing strategies, and low-dose multi-drug regimens. In addition, the MUSC LDL Apheresis Program offers an alternative for patients with severe elevations of LDL-C and known CVD. Investigational medications are also available by participation in one of the currently enrolling clinical trials (such as mipomersen, an injectable inhibitor of apo-B synthesis).
