New Patient Consultations and Second Opinions

New patient consultations require a physician or dentist referral and may be made by the referring doctor Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, at 843-792-9300. The patient's name, demographics and diagnosis will be taken. Our nurse coordinator will call the referring doctor and patient with appointment information. You may email us at headneck@musc.edu.

Most new patients are seen in an outpatient clinic and are not directly admitted to MUSC. If you need to discuss a hospital-to-hospital transfer, please call 843-792-2123 to speak with the Head and Neck Surgery on-call resident.  Referring physicians and dentists may speak to the on call physician through Meduline at 800-922-5250.

For questions about a consultation, you may email us at headneck@musc.edu.

Before Your Appointment

Please send copies of all records, lab reports, x-ray and scan reports, and pathology reports prior to your appointment. The actual CT Scans, MRI Scans, PET Scans and any biopsy or surgery pathology slides are required prior to the appointment. This information helps us plan for your care. Please send to:

Head & Neck Tumor Program at HCC
Medical University of South Carolina
86 Jonathan Lucas Street
Charleston, SC 29425

Scans - We request all CT scans, MRIs, PET Scans and other tests prior to your appointment so that we can get the opinion of our head and neck radiologist — a member of our multidisciplinary team — before you are seen.

Pathology reports and slides - We request that slides be sent before your appointment so that our head and neck or oral pathologist — another member of our multidisciplinary team — can review them before you are examined.

Previous treatment - We need all records of any surgery or cancer, radiation, or chemotherapy treatment that you have received.

In addition, we request any other information that may help us plan for your exam.

Return Patients

Patients who have been treated before at The Head and Neck Tumor Program are existing patients and should call 843-792-8363 to schedule an appointment. If you are experiencing a new problem, call 843-792-9300 during regular business hours and ask to speak to the head and neck oncology nurse.

In case of an emergency, call 911.
