| Patrick J Cawley, MD, MBA, MHM, CPE, FACP, FACHE
Dr. Patrick Cawley is the chief medical officer and an associate professor of medicine at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina. In this role he is responsible for the quality and safety of all patient care programs as well as direct oversight of clinical service lines. Prior to his current position, he served as section chief of hospital medicine and Vice Chairman of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine at MUSC.
Dr. Cawley was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania where he attended Scranton Preparatory School and graduated with honors from the University of Scranton. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Georgetown University, an MBA from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and completed an internal medicine residency at Duke University. He is board certified in internal medicine and was named a Master in Hospital Medicine by the Society of Hospital Medicine. He is a certified physician executive through the American College of Physician Executives and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a Fellow in the Liberty Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
Dr. Cawley co-founded the first hospital medicine program at Duke University and later managed a private practice hospital medicine group in Conway, South Carolina. He is a Past-President of the Society of Hospital Medicine, the fast growing medical specialty society in the United States.
Dr. Cawley has worked in both academic and nonacademic hospitals and has served as a consultant to numerous hospitals in hospital medicine program development. He is a frequent lecturer on the competitive advantages of hospitalist programs as well as implementation of patient safety and quality programs in hospitals.
Dr. Cawley lives in Mount Pleasant, SC with his wife and three children.
