Dr. Joel Cook grew up in northeast Tennessee and came to Charleston to attend the College of Charleston. Enamored with Charleston, he remained here for his medical school training. His internship in internal medicine was completed at the University of Virginia. He returned to Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina for his dermatology residency, which he completed in 1996. He completed a Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, Shadyside, under the direction of the renowned John Zitelli, M.D. After completing his fellowship training in 1997, he joined the faculty of the Department of Dermatology at Medical University of South Carolina, where he is currently a Professor. He is active in national dermatologic surgery interests including the Test Committee of the American Board of Dermatology and holds various other positions. He also is associate editor of Dermatologic Surgery and associate editor of the Year Book of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. He has gained a national reputation in advancing the science of dermatologic surgical reconstruction. His area of expertise is Mohs micrographic surgery and general dermatologic surgery. His special interest is flap reconstruction of post surgical facial defects.
