Following medical school and house physician positions at London University, England, Dr. Costello entered radiology residency at the University of Toronto. He became board certified in nuclear medicine and radiology, and began his career at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. On faculty at Harvard Medical School, he was head of computed tomography and thoracic imaging at the Deaconess Hospital until 1996. During this period he established both a national and international recognition for his research on spiral CT. He established a CT clinical research center which pioneered the introduction of spiral CT into clinical practice. Dr. Costello’s research helped validate the clinical applications of spiral CT to vascular imaging, including pulmonary emboli, cardiac disease, and aortic pathology. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles, multiple abstracts and book chapters. He serves as a reviewer for multiple journals, including Radiology, American Journal of Roentgenology, and New England Journal of Medicine.
In 1996 Dr. Costello was recruited to become Director of Diagnostic Radiology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia. Over a 2-year period he successfully reorganized the hospital’s radiology program. He was the first Professor of Radiology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with an appointment at the University of Adelaide.
Returning to Harvard Medical School in 1999 as Chief of Thoracic Imaging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he was appointed Professor of Radiology at HMS. Under his five-year leadership, thoracic imaging became a highly productive five-person section both clinically and academically.
