| Dr. Egede is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. He is the Director of the MUSC Center for Health Disparities Research and the Director of the Charleston VA TREP – Understanding Health Disparities in Chronic Diseases. Dr. Egede has a master’s degree in clinical research and a fellowship in health services research.
Dr. Egede has participated and led research projects designed to understand racial/ethnic variations in health care. His expertise is in the interplay among psychosocial factors, race/ethnicity, and health outcomes for chronic diseases. He has authored over 35 original peer reviewed publications related to psychosocial influences on health and racial/ethnic differences in health outcomes in a variety of peer-reviewed journals including the Archives of Internal Medicine, Diabetes Care, American Journal of Medicine, and American Journal of Public Health. He is a standing member of the NIH scientific review study section – the Psychosocial Risk and Disease Prevention study section. In addition, he serves as a reviewer for the VA HSR&D SMRB and regularly serves as an ad hoc reviewer for NIMH special emphasis panels in the areas of mental health service delivery and ethnic disparities. He currently serves as a Deputy Editor for the Journal of General Internal Medicine and is on the editorial board of Current Diabetes Reviews.
