Family Medicine : Family Medicine Center Patient Care Information

Doctor with patient"Family medicine is a medical specialty.  Our physicians are certified through the American Board of Family Practice."

There is a strong emphasis in family medicine on promoting health and preventing disease, and our physicians here at University Family Medicine are well prepared to provide complete health care to patients of all ages.

The knowledge of individual, family, and community resources optimizes health care.  The family physician's care for the patient must include the entire continuum of intervention: health improvement, disease prevention, health maintenance, risk assessment, early detection, management, curative therapy, and rehabilitation.  The secure family physician does not hesitate to seek consultation to solve or manage problems when necessary for the patient's benefit. Efficient utilization of the entire health-care team is a necessary skill of the family physician.

Appointments:

For new patients please call MUSC Health Connection at 1-800-424-MUSC or 792-1414 locally.  Established patients, please call (843) 876-7100 to make an appointment.  You may also schedule an appointment on-line through our Online Appointment Request Form.

Please arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time to register you before you see your doctor.

After your first visit, you will have a family physician and a patient care team.  If your physician is not in clinic the day you wish to be seen, you will be scheduled with another physician on the same patient care team.

If you see that you will be unable to keep your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so that your time can be scheduled for another patient.

Cancellations:

Patients unable to keep appointments, please notify your Medical office twenty-four hours in advance.  Your visit will be considered missed if not canceled.

New patients who miss their appointment will not be rescheduled. Established patients are allowed three missed appointments within a year. Thereafter patients will be asked to find another provider. Patients who do not take responsibility for keeping appointments or of notifying the clinic of a cancellation prevent others from receiving needed health care.

Please be considerate of others!

Late Arrivals:

Patients 15 or more minutes late are considered missed appointments. You will be given the opportunity to reschedule, or if you have an urgent problem, you will be seen by an available provider as time and pre-existing scheduling permits.

Same Day Visits:

Please call (843) 792-3451 for same day appointments for urgent care needs.  Patients who arrive at the office without an appointment seeking medical care may be seen on a first come, first served basis by one of our providers. We will always try and be available to see you, but during certain times we may have to give patients with medical emergencies priority and ask that you wait or reschedule for a later time. Walk-in patients not requiring emergency service who arrive after 11:00 am will be seen by a provider during the afternoon session from 1:00-5:00 pm; those arriving after 4:00 pm not requiring emergency service may be asked to return to the office the following day or to schedule an appointment for a convenient time.

Referrals:

Referrals to specialists or specialty care offices will be provided by your physician and processed by a referral coordinator within 72 hours. Retroactive referrals will not be processed. Your responsibility is to notify your provider of a necessary referral in advance of a scheduled appointment with a specialist.

Emergency Care:

A doctor can be reached for medical emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For after-hours emergency care, call 792-3451 and let the MUSC operator know you are an MUSC Family Medicine patient and give them your physician's name. The provider on-call will return your call.

If the emergency is severe and the patient's life is in danger, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 for assistance. Give emergency personnel the name of your doctor, or let them know you are a patient at the MUSC Family Medicine Center.

The emergency line should not be used for routine matters like prescription refills or non-urgent problems.

Hospital Care:

If hospitalization is necessary, our patients receive care from the Family Medicine Center team either at MUSC Hospital or Trident Regional Medical Center.

Telephone Messages:

We encourage you to call us with any questions you have about your health or the health of one of your family members. Our nurses are able to answer most of your questions. If your question requires a doctor's opinion, the nurse will consult your doctor and return your call. If your call is about a confidential matter, or if you need to speak directly to a provider, the nurse will arrange for your call to be returned.

Prescription Refills:

For patients who use the Family Medicine Center Pharmacy you can now use our Automated Prescription Refill Line.  Please have your prescription bottle at hand and dial 792-3064. Select option 1 to refill your prescription.  For prescription refills all you will need to enter is a telephone number where you can be reached, and the 6-digit prescription number on your prescription bottle label.  The system will ask you to verify your information and give you a pick-up time for your prescription(s).

Patients who do not use the Family Medicine Center Pharmacy must contact their own pharmacy to request prescription refills.
