The only substitute for a human cornea is another human cornea. Corneal transplant surgery would not be possible without the thousands of generous donors and their families who have donated corneal tissue so that others may see. Lifepoint's Ocular Division was formerly known as the South Carolina Lions Eye Bank. The South Carolina Lions Eye Bank was established in 1957 by the Lions of South Carolina. In January 2003, Lifepoint and the South Carolina Lions Eye Bank merged in order to provide a more efficient donor program for South Carolinians. Lifepoint's Ocular Division is a member of the Eye Bank Association of America and is responsible for procuring, processing and distributing safe, viable eye tissue for transplant, research and education. You can obtain an organ donor card from a South Carolina driver's license office, Lifepoint Inc. or from a member of your local Lions Club. Anyone can be a donor. Anyone can give the gift of sight. If you, or someone you know, would like more information about donating corneal tissue, please call Lifepoint Inc. at 843-763-7755 or visit them online at www.lifepoint-sc.org. |
