Storm Eye Institute doctors specializing in cataract surgery:

Arrow Kerry Solomon, MD

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world.
A cataract forms when the normally clear lens of the eye hardens and becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision or problems with glare from lights or the sun.

According to the National Eye Institute, more than 20 million Americans aged 65 and older have cataracts, and more than half of all Americans will have cataracts by the time they are 80. As a result, more than 1.4 million cataract surgeries are performed in the United States each year.

Cataract surgery has undergone a tremendous improvement over the last quarter century. This can be credited to the efforts of expert Kerry Solomon, MD, at Albert Florens Storm Eye Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina who remain at the forefront of the latest and most innovative treatments for ophthalmic conditions. Dr. Solomon recognizes that ongoing research is the key to identifying ways to improve the treatment of cataracts and remain actively involved in both the research side of cataract treatment and the clinical side of providing advanced treatment options for cataract patients.

In fact, Storm Eye Institute is a national leader in both research and clinical care by conducting some of the Southeast's most progressive cataract and refractive clinical trials, all in an effort to provide the latest techniques to our own patients and advancements in technology for all patients worldwide.

Although cataracts rob so many individuals of clear vision, they are curable. Storm Eye Institute offers state-of-the-art, outpatient surgery for cataract removal – from routine procedures to complicated, high risk cases. During cataract surgery, our surgeons replace a cloudy lens with an artificial lens. This relatively quick and painless outpatient procedure has become so advanced that patients rarely require stitches or patches and return home with very few restrictions. Frequently, this procedure provides an added benefit of minimizing the need for glasses after surgery as well.

As we age, there are certain medical issues we are almost certain to face – like cataracts. If you are finding it increasingly difficult to take afternoon walks because of the glare from the sun, if the TV screen has started blurring even when you are wearing glasses, or you are finding it difficult to drive at night, you may need to be evaluated for cataracts.

The rate of cataract progression can be unpredictable. While some cataracts worsen over a course of years, others progress in a few short weeks. The specialists at Storm Eye Institute will work with you to evaluate your condition and to determine the course of treatment that is best for you. The entire team at Storm Eye Institute is committed and focused to safeguarding our most precious sense, vision.

If you, or someone you know, would like more information about cataract treatment options, contact Storm Eye Institute at (843) 792-8100 or toll-free at (800) 894-3513.
