Storm Eye Institute : Storm Eye Institute : Edward Wilson, MD

M. Edward Wilson, Jr., MD is the director of Albert Florens Storm Eye Institute and the chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Additionally, he holds the Pierre Gautier Jenkins Endowed Chair. His medical specialty is pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus. He has been awarded the academic rank of professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics.

Dr. Wilson received his bachelor degree from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina and his medical degree from MUSC. After completion of his internship in internal medicine and his residency in ophthalmology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Wilson completed his fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Wilson served as commander in the United States Navy Medical Corps from 1980-1990. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal and was twice awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.

Dr. Wilson is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is an Honor Award recipient from both the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition to the many current and past committee and Board positions, Dr. Wilson is executive editor of the American Journal of Ophthalmology and serves as the Pediatric Issues Consultant to the National FDA Ophthalmic Devices Panel. The South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology selected him for the inaugural Ophthalmologist-of-the-year Award in 2001.

Dr. Wilson’s patient care and research interests include cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation for children as well as the full range of strabismus (eye misalignment) disorders in children and adults. He has trained surgeons from across the USA and from nearly every corner of the globe. He has given more than 430 invited presentations at national and international conferences including nine named lectures. He has published more than 150 scientific papers and chapters on a wide variety of subjects. His latest book on pediatric cataract surgery was published in 2005 and is the only text of its kind in the World.

Dr. Wilson has consistently received the Best Doctors in America award and has also been selected for America’s Top Doctors for 2003, 2004, and 2005.
