Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery

In 2003, a fellowship in head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina was established. The fellow will be given the appointment of Clinical Instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and will be exposed to multiple preceptors in a busy, tertiary care, academic health care facility.

The fellow is expected to be prepared to undertake the clinical, outpatient, inpatient, and surgical care of complicated head and neck cancer patients including those requiring microvascular reconstruction, skull base surgery, carotid resection and bypass, osseointegrated implants and prosthetics, and post chemoradiation surgery. The fellow will be involved in medical student, dental student, and resident education. It is expected that the one year fellow will be involved in over 20 open skull base surgical procedures, ten endoscopic skull base procedures, and 50-100 microvascular reconstructive procedures. The fellow will spend time with radiation oncology, medical oncology, neuroradiology, pathology, oral pathology, maxillofacial prosthodontics, physical therapy, nutrition, Mohs micrographic surgery and oculoplastic surgery.

This one-year position includes an emphasis on head and neck tumor surgery, microvascular reconstructive surgery, thyroid/parathyroid disorders, skull base surgery and facial plastic surgery. Additional clinical time is available in cleft lip/palate surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery, oculoplastic surgery and maxillofacial prosthodontics. The fellow will also perform clinical and call duties at the Ralph H. Johnson V.A . Medical Center and East Cooper Regional Medical Center. The fellow will participate in joint research efforts and publications.

In addition to an extensive surgical experience, the fellow benefits from a multidisciplinary approach by participating in outpatient clinics, rounds, and didactic conferences.

The applicant should have significant experience in surgery of the head and neck and be BC/BE in Otolaryngology, General Surgery, or Plastic Surgery. A South Carolina medical license should be obtained prior to the fellowship year.

In addition, for the past three years, we have sponsored foreign otolaryngologists who have come for six-month to one-year research fellowships. We have hosted two physicians from Turkey and one from Mexico who have functioned as research fellows and clinical observational fellows.

Fellowship in Rhinology & Endoscopic Sinus/Skull Base Surgery

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina is proud to offer a one year fellowship in Rhinology & Sinus Surgery under the mentorship of Rodney J. Schlosser, MD. This fellowship is designed to offer comprehensive training in all aspects of medical and surgical treatment of primary and revision inflammatory sinusitis, anterior and central skull base neoplasms, orbital and optic nerve pathology, and otolaryngic allergy and prepare the fellow for practice as a tertiary rhinologist. Fellows have junior faculty privileges and graduated responsibility, both in the OR and in clinic, with the opportunity for increasing independence throughout the year. Salary and benefits are commensurate with a PGY-6 level.

Clinical: Surgical caseload (approximately 250 cases per year) currently includes approximately 25-30% sinonasal and skull base tumors, 10-15% non-inflammatory rhinology (CSF leaks/encephaloceles, HHT, orbital surgery, etc.), and 60% inflammatory sinus disease (90% revision/frontal cases). Depending upon the interests of the fellow, additional surgical experience is available in open skull base approaches, rhinoplasties, and oculoplastic procedures with fellowship-trained subspecialists in each of those areas. Fellows will spend approximately 2 days per week in the OR, 1 day per week in the clinic with Dr. Schlosser, and ½ day per week in their own clinic. Experience in otolaryngic allergy is also available and attendance at courses sponsored by the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy is supported.

Research: One and a half days per week are reserved for research. Laboratory space and funding are provided for basic science research investigating the immunologic response of chronic sinusitis. Additional material is available for clinical research. Fellows are expected to write 2 manuscripts and give national/regional presentations of their research during the year.

Education: The fellow is expected to attend Sinus Conference twice monthly and give 3-4 conferences per year. In addition, the fellow will serve as a faculty member for the Annual MUSC Sinus Course, a conference which draws physicians from across the country. An eleven station Sinus Laboratory is fully outfitted with video equipment, powered instrumentation, and image-guided system for self-paced dissection, research, and resident education.
