The mission of The Nose & Sinus Center is to serve as a leader in promoting the highest standards of medical care for patients with diseases of the sinuses through patient care, teaching and the discovery of new knowledge. The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery is proud to announce that The Nose & Sinus Center of MUSC has been designated as a “National Center of Excellence.” MUSC is one of only two medical centers in the country to receive such an honor. This recognition has led to a commitment by BrainLAB Inc., an international computerized image-guidance company, and several other leading equipment manufacturers to donate more than $1.2 million in sinus instrumentation to MUSC. This equipment is used in our Sinus Laboratory to teach surgeons from around the country how to perform surgery with the latest cutting edge technology and instrumentation. Clinical Areas In addition to the evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric sinusitis, The Nose & Sinus Center of MUSC treats patients with a variety of other disorders including: - Inhalant allergies

Education The faculty of The Rhinology Division conducts community outreach and free educational seminars on a regular basis. This enables patients in our community to be thoroughly knowledgeable about their diseases and the latest treatments. In addition to patients, The Rhinology Division trains physicians of all disciplines in the proper evaluation and medical and surgical treatment of patients with diseases of the sinuses.
While Dr. Schlosser and others regularly travel around the US speaking and training ENT physicians in the latest medical and surgical techniques, the Department of Otolaryngology also hosts outside physicians and permits them to observe the most modern techniques in our Sinus Laboratory.

Clinical and basic science research areas The Rhinology Division is actively involved in research to improve the diagnosis and treatment for all patients with disorders of the sinuses. Current areas of research, which are listed on the Rhinology Research page, include basic and clinical sciences for patients with allergies, chronic sinusitis and sinonasal neoplasms. Faculty Rodney J. Schlosser, MD is the Director of Rhinology and Sinus Surgery and is currently the ONLY fellowship-trained sinus surgeon in the state of South Carolina. After graduating from the US Military Academy at West Point and serving four years of active military duty in the US Army, Dr. Schlosser received a medical degree from the Mayo Clinic. He then completed an ENT residency at the University of Virginia followed by an additional year of study during a fellowship devoted exclusively to the treatment of advanced sinus disease at the University of Pennsylvania with David W. Kennedy, MD and William Bolger, MD, two of the premiere sinus surgeons in the world. Dr. Schlosser has written more than 70 articles and chapters dealing with sinus and nasal topics. He also regularly travels around the country to speak and teach courses on the latest techniques in endoscopic sinus surgery and computerized image-guided surgery. Other faculty members include Mark J. Hoy, MD, and Boyd Gillespie, MD who treat general adult and pediatric sinus disorders. Lucinda Halstead, MD and David White, MD focus on pediatric sinus and allergy disease. Terry Day, MD is the Director of the Hollings Cancer Center and treats benign and malignant tumors of the sinuses and skull base. J. David Osguthorpe, MD focuses on adult sinus and allergy disorders and skull base tumors. Dr. Osguthorpe is a past president of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. Additionally, the Division is supported by Sarah Koepp, PA, who spends approximately half of her time in the Rhinology Division. Key equipment/resources The Rhinology Program is equipped with the latest equipment for clinical care. MUSC has image-guided systems in all operating rooms and digital imaging systems and video capture in all clinics. They are actively working with equipment companies to develop additional skull base equipment for endoscopic surgery. An 11-station sinus laboratory is equipped with an image-guidance system, powered and hand instrumentation, and digital video systems for educational purposes. Basic science research moved into dedicated space in the Children’s Research Institute in 2004, where the Rhinology Technician is fully dedicated to rhinology research. |
