About Allergy

Allergic disorders include:

  • Inhalant allergy or hayfever
  • Food allergy
  • Insect sting allergy
Allergy is known to play a critical role in the development of a number of diseases that affect the ear, nose and throat including:
  • Chronic ear infections in children and adults
  • Asthma
  • Nasal polyps
  • Chronic Sinusitis

Patients with these conditions often benefit from allergy evaluation and treatment.

Perhaps nowhere in the field of Otolaryngology has there been such a resurgence of interest as in Otolaryngic Allergy. Numerous significant changes and expansions of the Allergy Division have occurred over the past five years. A comprehensive allergy satellite office, MUSC ENT Associates, has opened under the medical direction of Dr. Mark Hoy. Several other members of the Department provide allergy services. All are members of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy and include two fellows and one past President. The Rutledge Tower office also offers allergy services. Significant progress has been made to coordinate services at these two locations so that patients can be seen, tested and treated at either site.

Services presently being offered by the Allergy Division include:

  • Prick test screening
  • Intra-dermal dilutional testing
  • Modified quantitative testing utilizing “blended” techniques
  • Serum IgE measurements
  • Evaluation of food allergy
  • Traditional injection immunotherapy
  • Sublingual immunotherapy

The Allergy Division coordinates with the Rhinology Division to provide comprehensive diagnostic, medical and surgical management to patients with inflammatory diseases of the upper aerodigestive tract.

Allergy Division Accomplishments

1. Allergy Division at East Cooper - During the past three to four years, a comprehensive allergy practice has been organized and implemented at the East Cooper facility. A complete range of diagnostic and treatment options are available for patients with inhalant and food allergy. All of the necessary equipment, supplies and personnel are in place and fully operational.
2. Allergy Workshop - The Allergy Division's first hands-on allergy workshop was conducted in the spring of 2005. This workshop was supported by Lincoln Diagnostics, an allergy supply company, and was attended by all residents and several faculty members. Similar workshops and seminars are planned at least every two years to allow residents the opportunity to attend two during their training.
