Shaun A. Nguyen M.D., M.A., is Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery. A native of Hilton Head Island, Dr. Nguyen received a bachelor's degree in Applied Sociology/Biology from The Honors College of the University of South Carolina, where he played collegiate golf and was a member of five National Honor Societies. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and East Carolina University, where he earned a master’s degree in Public Health/Biostatistics. Following medical school and an internship in medicine and surgery at University College London, England, Dr. Nguyen returned home to South Carolina and MUSC in 2000 for an NIAAA fellowship in psychiatry/substance abuse where he received seven Junior Investigator Awards for his research. Dr. Nguyen’s research helped to validate the clinical applications of topiramate in the treatment of alcoholism. After completing his fellowship, he received a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology in 2005, where he helped to develop a strong clinical research program. Dr. Nguyen has been PI or Co-PI on more than 25 clinical trials and has authored more than 60 abstracts and 20 peer reviewed articles in both substance abuse and radiology. He serves as a guest reviewer for multiple journals and serves on the judging committee for The Perry V. Halushka MUSC Student Research Day. In 2006, Dr. Nguyen received a secondary faculty appointment in the College of Health Professions, where he teaches Clinical Research Methodology and serves as Faculty Mentor to students in the Physician Assistant and Anesthesia for Nurses programs. Dr. Nguyen was recently appointed to the Education Curriculum Evaluation Committee in MUSC’s School of Medicine, teaching a Doctoring course to first and second year medical students. Dr. Nguyen’s interests center around translational, multidisciplinary, and health disparities research. With his broad scope of medical training and research experience, he plans to bring more pharmaceutical and investigator-initiated clinical trials to the Department of Otolaryngology.
