Department of Otolaryngology : Faculty & Staff : Bonnie Martin-Harris, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BRS-S

Dr. Bonnie Martin-Harris has been the Director of the MUSC Evelyn Trammell Institute for Voice and Swallowing since 2000. The Institute is part of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and is named in memory of Mrs. Evelyn Trammell, a supporter of Dr. Martin-Harris’ clinical, research and educational activities. The Institute partners with a team of 18 speech-language pathologists at MUSC Hospital and is renowned for the compassionate and comprehensive communication and swallowing services provided to infants, children and adults.
 
A licensed and certified speech-language pathologist, Dr. Martin-Harris received her bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She received a master's degree from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and a doctorate degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She has practiced in California, Wisconsin, Illinois, Georgia and South Carolina. She is a national and international leader in her field, and has focused her practice in the specialty areas of voice and swallowing disorders that result from head and neck cancer, respiratory disorders, and neurologic conditions. Dr. Martin-Harris founded and directed the Evelyn Trammell Voice and Swallowing Center at Saint Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta from 1991 until 2000 and globalized the center’s mission to the Medical University of South Carolina. She maintains collaboration between the Atlanta Evelyn Trammell Center and MUSC’s Trammell Institute in clinical, research and academic endeavors.

A member of the Editorial Board of the Dysphagia Journal, Dr. Martin-Harris has published articles in peer-reviewed journals, authored book chapters and digital publications. She has been an invited speaker at national and international forums in the United States, Canada, Europe and Africa. Her clinical research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Mark and Evelyn Trammell Trust. She is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), chair of the Board for Board Recognized Specialists in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, secretary treasurer for the Dysphagia Research Society, and member of the ASHA Specialty Interest Divisions 3 and 13 for Voice and Swallowing Disorders.

Dr. Martin-Harris resides on Daniel Island with her husband and daughter.
