M. Boyd Gillespie, MD, has been a faculty member in the MUSC Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery since 2000. He grew up in Anderson, SC, prior to attending Davidson College where he was magnum cum laude in Classics and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1990. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1994, and spent the next 18 months in general surgery training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He completed a residency in Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins in 1999, followed by a one year fellowship in head and neck surgery and laryngology with Dr. Charles Cummings at Johns Hopkins. In 2004, Dr. Gillespie received a Master's degree in Clinical Research from the MUSC Department of Biometry and Epidemiology after completing two years of rigorous course work. During his professional career, Dr. Gillespie has focused on the care of patients with head and neck cancer, salivary gland disease, thyroid tumors, voice and airway disorders, swallowing disorders, and sleep apnea. He is the Director of the MUSC Sleep Clinic at East Cooper and a surgical consultant to the MUSC Sleep Disorders Center. He has published more than 30 papers and book chapters on diseases of the head and neck, and has given presentations at more than 50 regional and national conferences. He serves on national committees on head and neck cancer, evidence-based medicine, and sleep apnea. Dr. Gillespie is a consultant to the American Academy of Anesthesiology’s guidelines on the management of the sleep apnea patient. He currently has grant funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Disorders. Dr. Gillespie is actively involved in organized medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, American Medical Association, and is a fellow in both the American College of Surgeons and the American Head & Neck Society. He is a question writer for the American Board of Otolaryngology, and former secretary-treasurer of the SC Society of Otolaryngology. He is past president of the SC Chapter of the Yul Brynner Head & Neck Cancer Foundation, which supports head and neck cancer survivors and their families.
