The emergency department at MUSC provides around-the-clock readiness, staffed with board-certified emergency physicians and with a network of support personnel, ready to respond to any health crisis.
MUSC’s emergency facility features state-of-the-art equipment, such as bedside ultrasound and a high-speed 64-beam CT scanner, as well as highly advanced specialists in every field of medicine. Unlike non-teaching facilities, we are able to provide a specialist in virtually any field to the patient’s bedside 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.
Located next door to MUSC’s adult Emergency Department, the Pediatric Emergency Department at MUSC Children’s Hospital is South Carolina's only full-service pediatric emergency room. It is open 24 hours a day and is staffed by physicians specially trained in pediatric emergency medicine and nurses certified in pediatric life support.
MUSC has the only nationally recognized trauma center in South Carolina. Our Level I trauma center is staffed and equipped to provide multi-disciplinary, coordinated care for adult and pediatric patients with multiple severe injuries. A Level 1 trauma center is able to manage severe shock from bleeding, rapidly assess and treat multiple complex injuries at the same time. Patients are transported to MUSC via helicopter and ambulance from throughout the state because of our unique capability to treat patients with the most severe illnesses and injuries.
MUSC is certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center, which means patients brought here have immediate access to life-saving care and the greatest chance of survival and of recovery. Evidence shows that Advanced Primary Stroke Center hospitals have better patient outcomes. MUSC’s dedicated “Brain Attack Team” provides rapid treatment for suspected stroke patients. Combined with unparalleled expertise in both Neuroradiology and Interventional Neuroradiology, we offer the absolute best care available in the Lowcountry for potentially catastrophic brain events.
The Society of Chest Pain Centers has designated MUSC as an Accredited Chest Pain Center. Located at 25 Courtenay Drive in the Ashley River Tower, the Chest Pain Center team at MUSC specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of acute coronary syndromes and heart failure. As a nationally accredited Chest Pain Center, patients are fast-tracked upon arrival for immediate care, offering the best chances for survival.MUSC also works closely with Charleston County EMS personnel, who can send patient EKG results from the field. This enables MUSC physicians and staff to be ready to quickly treat certain types of heart attack patients with angioplasty, the preferred emergency procedure for opening the arteries of those patients. In the case of heart attack patients, time means muscle—so the quicker a patient can receive the appropriate treatment, the better his or her chances are to survive.
