Dietitian Q/A
Because of the contents of some questions and the large number we receive, the MUSC Dietitians only answer selected questions. Although we discourage questions regarding personal health problems, scheduling an appointment with the outpatient dietitian to address these concerns is encouraged. Appointments can be made after a physician referral is received.

Question:
My doctor has prescribed a medicine which will require me to follow a low tyramine diet. I have done a little research and have a good idea of which foods to avoid, but I am left wondering if there's any tyramine in refridgerated almond milk.

Answer:
Almond milk is likely to be safe. Almonds are not recommended on a low tyramine diet because they contain a significant amount of tyrosine, which is converted by the body to tyramine. However, almond milk contains very little protein, and therefore very little tyrosine.
