Because of the contents of some questions and the large number we receive, the MUSC Dietitians only answer selected questions. Although we discourage questions regarding personal health problems, scheduling an appointment with the outpatient dietitian to address these concerns is encouraged. Appointments can be made after a physician referral is received.

Question: My husband was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing the typical treatments, surgery & chemo. I've been reading alot about the link between cancer & diet and some things that I'm reluctant to believe (coffee enamas, colon cleanses, etc). So I'd like to consult with a nutritionist on how to best feed my husband for recovery and myself for cancer avoidance. Are those specialities within your nutrition counseling services? If not, would you recommend someone to us? If so, how do I make an appointment?

Answer:

We have an oncology dietitian at Hollings Cancer Center and he would be happy to assist you with nutritional guidance. He can help your husband with good nutrition during and after his cancer treatments and would also be able to discuss healthy eating to avoid cancer with you.

To make an appointment with the oncology dietitian:

1) Obtain a referral from you physician. They can use the referral form from the following link:

Or they can use their own form. If they are an MUSC physician, they can also put a referral in our internal system, Practice Partner.

2) Once you have the referral, you or your physician can call 792-9300 to schedule an appointment for you or your physician can fax the referral to 792-1190 and the scheduling department will call you to set up the appointment.
