Children’s ear, nose and throat problems, whether simple or complex, frequently affect other bodily systems. That’s why young patients benefit from the expertise of ENT physicians who exclusively see pediatric patients and provide the full spectrum of care to address their special needs. MUSC Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery offers the state’s only multidisciplinary pediatric otolaryngology team and the only group of fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists in the Lowcountry. “Our pediatric sub-specialists are experts at linking a disease process with other things that may be going on with the child — for example, a relationship between airway and digestive problems or speech problems and hearing problems,” says David R. White, M.D., one of MUSC’s three pediatric otolaryngologists. “I think the biggest advantage we offer is a comprehensive picture of the child’s health as a whole.” Through MUSC Children’s Hospital, pediatric ENT patients have open access to a wide range of pediatric sub-specialists in a family-centered environment. Collectively, that’s an exceptional level of experience and comfort in caring for children. MUSC’s pediatric ENT team manages simple cases, such as chronic ear infections, tonsil and adenoid issues and chronic sinus problems, as well as tertiary pediatric problems, such as complex neck masses, cleft lip and cleft palate, and reconstruction of other congenital anomalies of the ear, nose and throat. “Specifically, having pediatric ENT training in addition to general ENT training allows a better understanding and management of complex congenital problems and complex ENT problems in otherwise healthy kids,” Dr. White says. |
