CPS-3 Cancer Prevention Study

The Medical University of South Carolina is proud to be a host site for The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), a national research study to better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. The goal is to enroll at least 300,000 adults from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from across the U.S and to ultimately eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future generations.

“If you have ever had a friend or
family member diagnosed with
cancer, one of the hardest things is
feeling like we can’t do anything to
help. CPS-3 is something we can do
to help in the fight against this
disease.”
– Study participant

Who can join the study?

The study is open to anyone in the United States and Puerto Rico who meets the following criteria:

  • willing to commit to the study long-term, which means completing periodic follow up surveys at home every 2-3 years for the next 20-30 years
  • between 30 and 65 years old at the time they join the study
  • have never been diagnosed with cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer)

How do I sign up?

Step 1

Sign Up Online - View the available locations and dates and schedule your in-person enrollment appointment. Enrollment at MUSC will be held in the Ashley River Tower (ART) Auditorium (1st floor) on Thursday, January 31st, 2013 from 7:00am -10:30am and 3:30pm-7:00pm. Other locations and dates are available throughout the lowcountry. Walk-ins will be accepted, but you are strongly encouraged to make an appointment in advance.

Step 2

Complete the Online Survey - After completing the online sign-up, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with instructions to go online and complete your first, most comprehensive survey. This survey will ask you questions regarding medications you are taking, family history of cancer, lifestyle and other behaviors. This survey should be completed prior to your appointment time.

Step 3

In-person Enrollment - At your scheduled appointment, you will be asked to sign an informed consent form, complete a brief survey, as well as provide a waist circumference measurement and a small blood sample (similar to a doctor’s visit). The blood sample will be taken by a certified, trained phlebotomist. Your appointment should last approximately 20 - 30 minutes.
