Dennis K. Schimpf , M.D.
Dr. Schimpf is the director of the MUSC Advanced Breast Reconstruction Program. While Dr. Schimpf is skilled in a wide range of plastic surgery procedures, both cosmetic and reconstructive, his main focus is breast reconstruction following breast cancer. While Dr. Schimpf offers the full array of breast reconstruction procedures to his patients, he has extensive expertise in microsurgery, including advanced techniques for breast reconstruction that involve transplanting natural tissue, such as the DIEP flap procedure.
Dr. Schimpf’s other interests include body contouring after dramatic weight-loss surgeries and abdominal wall reconstruction for patients who have recurrent/large hernias. In addition, he is also skilled in cosmetic surgery both for the face and body.
Dr. Schimpf is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. After completing medical school, Dr. Schimpf completed a five-year residency in general surgery at the University of Buffalo followed by his plastic surgery fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). While completing his fellowship in Charleston, Dr. Schimpf had the privilege to work directly with renowned breast reconstruction surgeon Dr. Bob Allen, who pioneered the DIEP and other muscle sparing perforator flaps.
Upon completion of his training, Dr. Schimpf chose to join the faculty of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. In addition to his commitment as the director of the MUSC Advanced Breast Reconstruction Program, he is an attending surgeon, an assistant professor of surgery and the associate program director for the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Training Program.
Dr. Schimpf’s extensive experience coupled with his innovative thinking, meticulous attention to detail, and engaging style, allows him to achieve each of his patient’s reconstructive and aesthetic goals.
