Esther M Bowie, MD, is assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and is a specialist in diseases of the retina and vitreous with the Albert Florens Storm Eye Institute.

Dr. Bowie joined Storm Eye Institute in 2005 upon completion of a surgical fellowship in diseases of the vitreous and retina at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Prior to her fellowship, she received her residency training at MUSC. She earned her medical degree (MD) from the University of the West Indies and BSc in biochemistry from the University of the West Indies/Mayo Clinic, graduating with honors, and served her internship at the University of the West Indies and at MUSC.

Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Bowie holds medical licensure in South Carolina, Iowa and the District of Columbia. In addition to MUSC, she has held hospital appointments at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the University Hospital of the West Indies. Dr. Bowie served as chief resident of ophthalmology at MUSC from 2001-02 and is currently assistant professor at MUSC. Her major teaching responsibilities include teaching and supervising medical students and ophthalmology residents.

Dr. Bowie is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association and the American Society of Retinal Specialists. Her list of awards and honors is lengthy, including the PJ Leinfelder Research Award from the University of Iowa, the Helma Research Award and the Program Director’s Award from Storm Eye Institute at MUSC, and the Dean’s Award. She was valedictorian of her medical school class, received the Glaxo Wellcome Award for Medical Excellence, the E.V. Ellington Pre-clinical Medal and Prize in biochemistry, the Walter Harper Prize in anatomy and the David Gunberg Prize in anatomy among many others.

Dr. Bowie has lectured on ocular melanoma follow 1-25 brachytherapy, the eye in systemic disease, quality of Web-based information on diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, and the cost effectiveness of glaucoma medications. She is published on a range of topics including acute multifocal posterior placoid pigment epitheliopathy and choroidal neovascularization; tonic pupil and sarcoidosis; endothelial decompensation after laser in situ keratomileusis; and open globe injuries in children.
