Stanley Cyril Baker, Jr., M.D. A resident of Greenwood, Dr. Baker has served on the MUSC Board of Trustees since 1977 as the medical profession representative from Congressional District 3. Dr. Baker served as Chair from 1986 to 1990. A retired general and thoracic surgeon, he graduated from The Citadel with a B.S. degree and received an M.D. degree from MUSC. Dr. Baker has been involved in a wide range of professional and community activities, including past Chief of Surgery at Self Memorial Hospital, Diplomate - American Board of Surgery, past President of both the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, and he is listed in “Who’s Who in North America.” Dr. Baker has four children.
Melvyn Berlinsky A lay representative from Congressional District 1, Mr. Berlinsky has served as an MUSC Trustee since 1971. He was the Board’s Vice-Chair from 1990 to 1994. He has served as a member of the Research Committee, the Hospital and Patient Care Committee, and as Chair of the Education, Faculty, and Student Affairs Committee. He also serves as the representative of the Board of Trustees to the Hollings Cancer Center Board. Mr. Berlinsky attended The Citadel, and he and his wife Joan have three sons.
William H. Bingham, Sr., P.E. Mr. Bingham is a licensed professional engineer and is president and owner of Hercules Contractors and Engineers, Inc., of Cayce, South Carolina. A lay representative from Congressional District 2, he began his term in 2002. Mr. Bingham is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He served on the State Private Industry Council of South Carolina and received the Contractor of the Year Award in 2000. Mr. Bingham is also an officer of the Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club and is a member of the West-Metro Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife Mary Lynn have three children.
Cotesworth Pinckney Fishburne, Jr., D.D.S. Dr. Fishburne, a native of Walterboro, has served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1988. He received a BS degree from Wofford College in 1959 and, since the State of South Carolina had no dental school at the time, he enrolled at the Medical College of Virginia, where he graduated in dentistry in 1963. After serving two years as Captain in the Army Dental Corps, Dr. Fishburne began his practice in Rock Hill in 1965 and continued until becoming semi-retired in 2002. He has served as an active member and as president of numerous local and state dental and civic organizations and is active in his Presbyterian Church. He and his wife Shirley have two college-age daughters. Dr. Fishburne currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.
William B. Hewitt, M.S.E.E. Mr. Hewitt, of Charleston, began his term on the Board of Trustees on June 30, 2003, as the Governor’s at-large appointee. He is President of Sirius Ventures, Inc., a consulting firm. He is Chair of the Board of Polymer Group, Inc., and Global Vantage International. He is also Chair of Water Missions International. He was the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Union Corporation prior to its sale to Outsourcing Solutions, Inc. Prior to joining Union Corporation, Mr. Hewitt was a founding partner and Executive Vice President of First Manhattan Consulting Group. He received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut and baccalaureate engineering degrees from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He was a member of the Board of The Union Corporation, which was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. He was also a member of the Board of Rexene, Inc., a chemical company also listed on the NYSE. Mr. Hewitt is active in the non-profit area, serving as Chair of the Board of the Spoleto Festival USA, Junior Warden of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Chair of The Citadel School of Business Administration Advisory Board, and was President of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association.
Donald R. Johnson II, M.D. Dr. Johnson, the medical professions representative from Congressional District 1, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1994. He is former Medical Director of the Department of Rehabilitative Services, Bon Secours-St. Francis Xavier Hospital. A native of Charleston, he received a B.S. from the College of Charleston before attending medical school at MUSC. Dr. Johnson served as the Chief Orthopaedic Surgery Resident at MUSC from 1988 to 1989 and is on the clinical faculty at MUSC in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Johnson is President-elect of the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association (2002-2003). He has also held academic appointments and visiting professorships in Hong Kong, Madrid, Paris and London. Dr. Johnson is the Medical Director of the Southeastern Spine Institute, P.C. Dr. Johnson and his wife Kim have two children.
Edward Conyers O’Bryan, Jr., M.D. This native of Florence has served on the Board of Trustees since 1976 as the medical professions representative from Congressional District 6. He served as Chair of the Board from 1994 to 1998 and was re-elected as Chair in 2000. After graduating from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. degree, Dr. O’Bryan received an M.D. from MUSC. He served as a Medical Officer in the United States Marines before returning to MUSC for his residency. Dr. O’Bryan is now in private practice in cardiology in Florence, and he holds a full clinical professorship at MUSC. His civic activities include serving on the Board of Directors of the Kiwanis Club, the Big Brother Association, and the Family YMCA. In 1995, Dr. O’Bryan was awarded the Order of the Palmetto. He and his wife Jennie have one child.
Paula E. Orr, M.D. Dr. Orr began her term on the Board of Trustees on July 9, 2003, as the Governor’s Designee. She is a physician and owner of Charleston Women’s Wellness Center in Charleston, SC. She has been honored by placement on the Charleston Regional Business Journal’s “Forty Under Forty” list, recognizing individuals with the “heart and talent to make a positive difference in our community.” She was also listed in Outstanding Young Women in America, Who’s Who among Executives and Professionals and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. She is a member of the Susan G. Komen Charleston Affiliate Board, Delta Sigma Theta Public Service Sorority and Jack & Jill of America. A graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. with a B.S. Degree in biology, Dr. Orr received an M.D. degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. She received her residency training and was chief resident in the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
Thomas C. Rowland, Jr., M.D. A former Vice-Chair and Chair of the MUSC Board of Trustees, Dr. Rowland has been a member of the Board since 1982, representing the medical profession from Congressional District 2. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, Dr. Rowland received an M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina before completing a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Rowland spent 10 years in the Navy before settling in Columbia to work in private practice. He has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto twice, and he was named Distinguished Alumnus of MUSC in 1994. A former President of the South Carolina Medical Association, he currently holds professorships at the USC School of Medicine and MUSC. He has also served as President of Southern Medical Association, Southern Gyn Society, and South Atlantic Association of Ob-Gyn. He is currently Treasurer of the American College of Ob-Gyn. Dr. Rowland has also visited China, India, Nigeria, and Afghanistan as a Field Training Consultant with Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife Isabelle have two children and six grandchildren.
Charles W. Schulze, C.P.A. A native of Greenwood, Mr. Schulze began his first term as a trustee in 2002 as the lay representative from Congressional District 3. A graduate of the University of Georgia, Mr. Schulze holds a Master of Accountancy from the University of South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972 and is a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Mr. Schulze is a senior shareholder of Elliott Davis, LLC. He is past president of the S.C. Association of CPAs and has received the organization’s Distinguished Public Service Award. He is also a past chair and board member of the S.C. Board of Accountancy. He was named among the 100 Most Influential Citizens of Western South Carolina in the 20th Century and served as the South Carolina Economic Development Ambassador for 2002. He and his wife Sarah have two children.
Thomas L. Stephenson, Esq. Mr. Stephenson has served on the Board since 1998. The lay representative from Congressional District 4, this Greenville attorney received both B.S. and J.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina. Specializing in all types of employment-related litigation as a partner with Nexon, Pruett, Jacobs, and Pollard, Mr. Stephenson is a certified specialist in employment and labor law. He has written many articles on the subject and has served as an adjunct professor of labor law at Clemson University. Mr. Stephenson’s contributions to public service have included President of the Legal Services Agency of Western Carolina; President of the Greenville Cancer Society; Greenville Civil Service Commission member; and 300 for Greenville. He and his wife Dianne have two children.
Charles Brannon Thomas, Jr., M.D. Elected as the medical professions representative from Congressional District 4 in 1996, Dr. Thomas practices Orthopaedic Surgery in Simpsonville. After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1973 with a B.S. in Psychology, he went on to obtain a B.S. in Pharmacy from MUSC in 1978 and an M.D. from MUSC in 1984. Dr. Thomas is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Widely published, Dr. Thomas also holds a US Patent for “Apparatus and Method for Implanting Distal Screws in Intramedullary Rod.” He and his wife Tricia have three children.
James E. Wiseman, Jr., D.M.D. Elected as the lay representative from Congressional District 5 in 2002, Dr. Wiseman is a retired dentist and a member of the South Carolina Dental Association. He is past president of the Central District Dental Society and past president of the S.C. Academy of Practice Administration. Dr. Wiseman is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and obtained a D.M.D. degree from the University of Louisville in 1959. Dr. Wiseman is the recipient of many awards, among which are the Governor’s Rural Summit Award, Woodrow Wilson Award, Order of the Palmetto, S.C. Dental Association Citizenship Award, and the S.C. Downtown Development Award. Dr. Wiseman currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Newberry Federal Savings Bank and is Chair of the Newberry Opera House Foundation. He served on the Newberry City Council from 1991 to 2000. The Honorable Robin M. Tallon Elected as the lay-person representative from Congressional District 6 in 2006, Mr. Tallon is President of Robin Tallon & Associates, a government affairs and international trade consulting firm headquartered in Washington, D.C. Congressman Tallon is also a realtor with Century 21 Realty in Florence, SC, specializing in commercial real estate and development.
Margaret Mazyck Addison, B.A. (Emerita) A native of Holly Hill, Mrs. Addison received a B.A. degree in English from Morris College and obtained a Master's in Education from South Carolina State University. Elected in 1994, she served as the lay representative from Congressional District 6 until 2002. Her career has included time as a teacher, supervisor of special education, director of instruction, and associate superintendent. She has also served as State Assessor for the South Carolina Leadership Academy and on the Board of Trustees of the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Mrs. Addison has been an educator for thirty years. She and her husband Beaufort have four children.
Charles B. Hanna, Sr., M.D. (Emeritus) This retired general, thoracic, and oncological surgeon in Spartanburg, elected in 1966, served on the MUSC Board of Trustees as the medical profession representative from Congressional District 4. He served as Chair from 1980 to 1984. He graduated from The Citadel and received an M.D. and further professional training at MUSC. Professional activities have included membership as a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, Board of the South Carolina Division of the American Cancer Society, Peer Review Committee of the South Carolina Medical Association, Medical Advisor for the Review Committee of Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and as past President of the South Carolina Industrial Medicine Association and of the MUSC Alumni Association. He and his wife Lenay have three children.
The Honorable Robert Campbell Lake, Jr., LL.B. (Emeritus) A resident of Newberry, Senator Lake has practiced law in Newberry County for over 52 years. Senator Lake was a member of the South Carolina Senate for sixteen years. During that time, he chaired the House and Senate Special Education Study Committee which sponsored the Commission on Higher Education Restructuring Bill. Senator Lake has served on the Board of Visitors for Wofford College, Clemson University, and Columbia College, and served 7 years on the Winthrop Board of Trustees. A former Vice Chair of the MUSC Board of Trustees, Senator Lake was elected in 1986 and did not seek reelection in 2002. Senator Lake has also served on the Board of Directors for the Health Sciences Foundation at MUSC for 10 years and became an emeritus member. Senator Lake served as attorney and a member of the Board of Shriner's Hospitals of North America, on which he has continued to serve as an emeritus member for 40 years. He and his wife Mary Anne have four sons and eight grandchildren.
Claudia Waites Peeples, B.A. (Emeritus) Currently residing in Barnwell, Mrs. Peeples began her service as at-large Trustee on the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1987. A graduate of the University of South Carolina with a B.A., she worked as the Director of the Barnwell County United Way from 1978 until her retirement in 1999. Mrs. Peeples’ experience includes serving on the University of South Carolina Board of Visitors, and as Chair of the Barnwell County Library Board of Trustees. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Regions Bank of South Carolina. She and her husband Rodney have two grown children.
The Honorable Phillip D. Sasser, J.D. (Emeritus) An attorney in Conway, Mr. Sasser was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1982 as the lay representative from Congressional District 6. He received a B.A. from Davidson College and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina. His professional and community activities include service as a municipal judge and city attorney in Conway, Family Court Judge, member of the South Carolina House of Representatives (1967-1972), member of the South Carolina and American Bar Association, member of the Public Defender Board of Directors, and President and Director of the Waccamaw Sertoma Club. He and his wife Pat have four children.
Hugh B. Faulkner III (Secretary) Elected Secretary of the Board in 1988, Bo Faulkner has served as the Assistant to the MUSC President for Executive Affairs since 1984. He is the Medical University’s voice in the state capital and in Washington, DC. Prior to his work at MUSC, Mr. Faulkner was the Director of Business and Government Relations for the State Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Faulkner is also distinguished for having completed “Leadership South Carolina,” an intensive course given to selected South Carolinians who are expected to become leaders in the state. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Rape Crisis Network of Columbia.
Allan E. Stalvey (Emeritus) Mr. Stavley is Senior Vice President for the South Carolina Hospital Association, responsible for overseeing the association’s advocacy effort at the state and federal levels. His government affairs experience began in 1977 with the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. In 1982, he left this position as Secretary to the Board of Trustees to become vice president and chief lobbyist for the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, the largest business advocacy association in the state. During this time he was elected by the state legislature to two, four-year terms to the Board of Trustees of the Medical University of South Carolina. He joined Waste Management’s subsidiary company, Chem-Nuclear Systems, Columbia, South Carolina, in 1985 and directed the government and public affairs program as a member of the senior management team for that company. In 1996, Mr. Stalvey was appointed to coordinate and direct the Waste Management’s state government affairs and community relations program out of their Washington, DC office. In January 1998, he took over the management of the DC office and, following a merger, assumed responsibility for all government activities for the Waste Management family of companies. He left Waste Management in 2002 and began consulting on various issues at the state level. He joined the staff of the South Carolina Hospital Association January 1, 2006 as senior vice president. Mr. Stalvey received his BA from The Citadel in 1970 and his MBA from the University of South Carolina in 1975. He is married and has three children.
